The iconic Dimetrodon is often thought of as a dinosaur, but lived around forty million years before them during the early Permian period - 295 - 272 million years ago - and is a species of early synapsid, which were reptile like in appearance, but actually were more closely related to mammals!

The tall sail on its back has made it one of the most recognizable prehistoric animals and was most likely used for courtship display.

Dimetrodon was an apex predator of its day, eating large fish and amphibians.
